Why I Don’t Watch ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Every Thursday, around the same time, my Twitter and Facebook feeds start buzzing about the same television show.

“Is Grey’s new tonight?”

“Only one more hour until Grey’s!”

“OMG, can you believe what is happening on Grey’s?”

“Grey’s,” of course, refers to Grey’s Anatomy, a popular medical drama on ABC. Usually I love to watch what everyone else is watching, but for some reason, I just can’t get into this show. When I see all the excitement over Grey’s start on Thursday afternoons, I wish I could be a part of it, but for some reason, Grey’s just isn’t my thing. Why don’t I like one of the most popular shows on television? I’ve put some (too much?) thought into it, and this is what I’ve come up with:

ER has ruined me for all other medical dramas. Um, hello? Anthony Edwards? Noah Wylie? George Cloony? Sorry, McDreamy, you ain’t got nothin’ on these guys. And let’s not forget ladies like Maura Tierny and Juliana Margulies. Call me old school, but for me no medical drama can compare to ER. When Dr. Greene died, my heart broke and I vowed never to fall in love with another television doctor ever again.

Katherine Heigl. Or as I like to call her, the poor man’s Charlize Theron. I just don’t like her. She’s not a bad actress, but something about her just rubs me the wrong way. I don’t like how she publicly dissed the movie Knocked Up, which helped make her famous (and featured my movie-husband Paul Rudd). And she came off like a pouting child when she removed herself from Emmy consideration in 2009. I can’t seem to separate her from the character she plays, which makes watching Grey’s Anatomy less than enjoyable for me.

I am already paranoid enough. I really shouldn’t be allowed to watch television dramas at all. Law and Order: SVU has me convinced that every man at the grocery store wants to abduct me and torture me in a basement somewhere. Once, I watched a House marathon, and by the end I was sure I had lupus. Watching these types of shows on a weekly basis isn’t good for my sanity. Next thing you know, my caffeine headaches will become inoperable brain tumors, and my poor husband already has enough to deal with.

What do you think? Am I missing out? Should I give Grey’s Anatomy another chance? Are there any television shows you just can’t get into, no matter how popular they are?

i’m late to the party, but i don’t watch “grey’s” either. my sisters love it, but it’s not my thing. we watch “house” and we watched “ER” and i will occasionally watch “private practice” if there’s nothing else on and i watched “off the map” mostly because i was missing my jungle-based doctors since “lost” went off the air.

truth be told, i shouldn’t watch ANY medical shows because i am ALREADY a notorious hypochondriac.

(oh, and in your list of “ER” hotties you forgot john stamos. lol.)

I have to admit I am a Greys junkie and I LOVED the musical Greys…but I am one of the select few that liked it. But I am the same way…I was reading a book about Asbergers (sp?) and watch Parenthood where the young boy has Asbergers and sometimes become convinced my daughter has a form…crazy I know. But we all have those shows that are a train wreck to watch and just can’t stop. I have a stupid guilty pleasure in watching that horrible show The Secret Life of the American Teenager…talk about horrible acting, writing, everything but I can’t help myself!

I understand! We all have our guilty pleasures. And on an intellectual level, I totally get why people love Grey’s. I just can’t get into it.

Glad to know that I’m not the only one who watches TV and then tries to diagnose myself/others!

No lie–I laughed RIGHT OUT LOUD at two things in this post: “the poor man’s Charlize Theron” (bwwhwhahhahaaa!) and “Once, I watched a House marathon, and by the end I was sure I had lupus.”

    I don’t watch Grey’s either…

Woohoo! I’m not the only one!

And seriously, too much House at one time is bad for your brain.

The last season of Survivor I watched is the one that Yul won…I go back and forth with that show. Same with Amazing Race.

You know me…I watch everything….I HATE greys! I don’t like Katherine Heigel either and I don’t like Merridith Grey, I’m sorry her last name is Sheppard because she married Derek via POST IT NOTE! I WAS a huge follower and even have a daughter named Sloane…NOT because of Mark Sloane on Greys, just ironic, I guess…but when everyone either died, got shot, got cancer, got hit by a car or became alcoholics, it kind of became too much yuck for me. I recently saw they had a “musical” episode because someone was hit by a car or a bus….I felt secure in my decision not to watch!

A musical episode? WHY? I just don’t get it.
