Adult Bieber Fever

It all started innocently enough.

My two year old son spent a day playing with my friend’s daughter. He came home singing this cute little song, something about “baby, baby, baby…oh!” When I asked my friend what he was singing, she informed me it was a song by teen sensation Justin Bieber. That floppy-haired kid? He seemed harmless.

Then one night I was home alone with the kids and my toddler was cranky. I had the bright idea of pulling up the “Baby” video on YouTube. My son’s demeanor changed instantly. He danced, twirled, and jumped around to the music. When it was over my son immediately said, “More baby-o?” I think we watched that video twenty times that night. By the end of the evening, I was singing along. It was a catchy little tune.

A few weeks later, the same friend who introduced me to The Bieb asked me if I would tag along with her when she took her daughter to see his new movie, Never Say Never. Because I’m a good friend, I agreed to go. And that’s where my casual affinity for Justin Bieber turned into full on Bieber Fever.

You see, what I didn’t expect to learn is that Justin Bieber is actually very talented. He wasn’t styled to be a teen pop sensation by some producer; he was discovered because his mom posted videos of him singing on YouTube. During the course of Never Say Never, he played the drums, the piano, and the guitar–all very well. His style of music may not be for everyone (or anyone over the age of 16), but he does have authentic musical talent.

His talent is impressive, but I think the most impressive thing about Justin Bieber is that he’s just a regular kid who also happens to be a huge pop star. His parents seem to have kept him pretty grounded and humble. He still hangs out with the kids he grew up with, he still has to listen to his mom, he still has to clean his room before he goes out, just like any other kid his age. There’s even a segment in Never Say Never where he makes fun of his signature floppy hairstyle. Overall, he doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously, and that’s refreshing in the age of Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan. It’s nice to see a genuinely talented kid who is able to be successful without turning his life into a train wreck.

So yes, despite the fact that some of my fellow Prime Parents’ Club contributors tease me mercilessly, I am a Justin Bieber fan. I have the fever. I think he’s a good kid, and I hope he continues to have success. And if you need someone to take your daughter to his concert, I’ll gladly take one for the team.
