Fashion Unfriendly

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s official: I am old.

I knew it was coming, but I thought I had more time. However, I was wrong. This season of Project Runway has clearly shown me that I am not the young and hip woman I thought I was.

Maybe I should explain myself. Even though I spend most of my time in yoga pants and t-shirts, I’ve always loved watching the fashion design show Project Runway because of the beautiful garments featured every week. Yes, there are some horrendous failures, but more often than not, the contestants do amazing things with a small amount of time and money. It’s exciting to see how they overcome challenges to create works of art.

More than anything else, Project Runway helped me feel like I was still in touch with what is fashionable. Yes I might have been too overweight/busy/broke to dress in the newest fashions, but at least I could recognize what was fashionable! It always made me feel good to hear Heidi Klum and Michael Kors second my opinion. When my favorite design was picked as the winner, I felt a certain amount of pride. Michael Kors agrees with me! I must be fashionable!

However, Season 9 of Project Runway has thrown me for a loop. The garments I love? Suddenly they are the ones in the bottom three, being called “boring” or “dated.” And the winning designs have me scratching my head in confusion. Shirts made out of sherpa fabric are cool now? I’d rather not look like the lining of my dad’s slippers, if you don’t mind. And if you ask me, putting a model on stilts doesn’t make a high-necked chiffon shirt stylish. My first thought was Little House on the prairie, not Elle Magazine.

So, dear readers, Project Runway has shown me that I am completely out of touch with fashion. I expect that there are tapered jeans and socks with sandals in my future. But if sherpa shirts are young and hip, I think I’d rather be an old fuddy-duddy.

This was so funny. I don’t watch Project Runway but I totally get what you’re saying. I used to consider myself pretty fashionable. Now, it’s a good day if I wear my hair down instead of in a ponytail.
