For many busy parents, it can be a battle to find a clean shirt and pants in the morning. Style (sometimes even just matching) goes to the wayside in an effort to get out the front door and to the office or kids to school on time. Fashion doesn’t need to be a time-consuming, confusing process. Use that holiday gift money (or treat yourself) to a few staple pieces that can be worked into your wardrobe throughout the year.
Below are a few, totally manageable trends for men and women in 2012. Ladies, many of these pieces can be used year round, and gents, the trends highlighted will show that you care about your appearance—an attractive characteristic.
Step away from the racks of black, brown and navy clothing hanging in your closet. 2012 is all about adding color! Work bold colors in to your wardrobe with colored jeans or corduroys. Spice up a solid colored outfit (ahem, your little black dress) with a bright clutch or a vibrant pair of shoes. Tangerine and aquamarine will be the trendy colors this spring and summer so look for a few pieces for your own closet—bonus, these hues tend to look good on most skin types.
Once clichéd, animal prints and furs are back! Now, this doesn’t give your full reign to dress as the animal (no cheetah printed pants, shirt, and shoes together), but you should work prints in to your style repertoire in conservative ways. Try a python print clutch or a fur vest. Zebra print flats or a collection of cheetah bangles are the perfect accessories for a low-key outfit.
Spice up your wardrobe and show a little sheer! This fun new trend can be incorporated into your wardrobe in slightly sexy sheer blouses, maxi skirts, or dresses with sheer cut-outs. Balance out the ultra-feminine look by pairing with edgier items. A flowy, sheer blouse looks great with a pair of black, skinny jeans!
While patterns and prints are nothing new in menswear, they’ve been taken to a whole new level this year. The runways featured men in bold, striped pants, and shirts, patterned jackets, socks and ties. While the idea of wearing striped pants might conjure up images of the Harlem Globe Trotters, incorporating this trend doesn’t need to be quite as intense. Check out pants, shirts, and jackets with small patterns in subtle colors; save the large patterns for your ties. For the early spring and fall, look for patterned sweaters you can pair with a basic tee or keep yourself warm with a scarf.
Mad Men fans rejoice, retro is in! What does this mean for your closet? For your next formal event, try a skinny tie, slim pants, and a pair of nice leather dress shoes. When summer hits, look for linen pants in earth tones—comfortable and fashionable. Complete your vintage look with aviator sunglasses and a fedora.
While they may not be quite as obsessive and hoarder-esque as shoe-loving women, men care about their footwear. That’s never been quite as evident as it is today. Men’s shoes have been overhauled for 2012. Jump on the bandwagon and get your hands on a pair of chukka boots, if you’re feeling adventurous, try a pair with a colorful sole. Or mix-up your shoe collection with a pair of patterned or colored loafers. And no more wearing athletic shoes with jeans; opt for a pair of casual sneakers instead.
