Contaminated pet treats from China may be causing pet illness and death. The widespread problem has resulted in Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown and Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich to call for the FDA to take action.
Unlike the pet and milk food scares from 2007 and 2008 which prompted the FDA to issue product recalls, the recent wave of pet deaths and illnesses have only prompted an FDA warning, while potentially deadly pet treats still sit on the shelves.
According to The Examiner, the estimated death and illness toll caused by the contaminated treats is in the hundreds; “this of course does not include cases where the connection has not yet been made between a pet’s illness and the treats.”
Pet owners are urged by animal advocacy groups to take the following actions:
- If your pet is sick and you have been feeding it these treats please report it to the FDA.
- Download the FDA warning here, and print and share copies.
- If you find products in your store that are from China or have been linked death or sickness in pets, supply the store with the printed info sheet and ask that they verify the safety of their products.
