Over 40 Fashion | Joan Collins Says 40-Plus Shouldn’t Wear Jeans

According to Joan Collins, women over 40 shouldn’t wear jeans because they usually don’t look good in them.

“If you must wear jeans, which are rarely glamorous in women over 40, wear dark blue or black and pair them with t-shirts that are fitted or jackets that are classically cut,” Collins told BBC Breakfast, according to U.K.’s Daily Mail.

However, Collins may be stuck in the “mom jeans” era. Today’s 40-plus women can feel confident in most fashion styles, even jeans. Updated designs have made it possible to look good in jeans, no matter your age, shape or size.

MyFashionCents.com gives some tips for women over 40 looking to rock the denim:

  • Choose darker washes
  • Avoid low-rise
  • Choose jeans with stetchy material

If you’re a plus-size over 40 woman, TLC’s Stacy London advised on The Today Show, “We don’t want to add extra volume to the frame and we do want to fit curves without anything looking too tight. Raise the visual center of gravity by pairing these jeans with an empire-waist top that gives the impression of a higher waistline and longer leg silhouette.”

Yes, I also agree that Joan is not my choice to go for fashion advice but still she was once quite a beauty in her day and knows how to dress professionally. I am reinventing my style, I quite wearing dresses years ago (unitl I lost weight) but not anymore. I wear a dress or skirt about 3/4 of the time now. I never did wear jeans much due to the heat in the South although most of my friends love jeans year round.

I must say that I agree with Joan (in most cases). Jeasn are not my top pick for heavier women. While I see that newer styles can be ablsolutely more flattering than the “Mom” jeans, I think American women have forgotten the wonderful A line dress or simply sundresses. The colorblock dresses and some of the new “retro” looking pattern dresses can be far more flattering, worn casually, and more comfortable than jeans! In hot weather a dress is my top choice. Don’t forget a simple skirt and plain bright tee is great with a pair of sandals.

Not to be Judgy McJudgy, but I find it *odd* that she’s talking about how women look in jeans when, um, she looks like this. I’m not sure her fashion advice is on…

I have to admit, Joan Collins isn’t the one I look to for my fashion advice…when she lives in Podunk and has to endure mud season with me, then we’ll talk heh heh!

Seriously, though, I think done right, any jeans that fit well and are flattering and appropriate for the occasion can be worn by a woman of any age ;-)
