8 Weeks Without Stepping on a Scale

About two months ago I let you in on my latest conquest–to go eight weeks without stepping on the scale. (Insert gasp!) I don’t think it’s a stretch to guess that the majority of women have an unhealthy obsession with this evil device.

So I set out to tackle the beast, and tackle it I did.

I’ll be honest, the first few days were driven by sheer determination to not step on the scale. I looked at the scale every day, so it wasn’t as easy as just putting it out of my sight and hope to forget about it. Each day it got easier to pass it by.

For those 8 weeks, I chose to focus on eating properly and training hard. I took pictures every two weeks so that I could see the actual changes rather than base everything on a number.

Wow … was it staggering.

For my food, I chose to follow a paleo plan for the first five weeks. I eliminated dairy, legumes, sugar and processed foods and focused on lean proteins, vegetables, some fruit and healthy fats. The last three weeks, I took it to the next level and followed paleo/Zone, which is the Zone diet with using only paleo-friendly foods. On that plan, to be very honest, the volume of food was incredible. Doesn’t make sense, right? I was eating 10 to 15 cups of vegetables a day, one fruit, 14 to 20 ounces of lean protein and my fats.

My training consisted of two to three runs per week (one a long one) in preparation for two half marathons in a month, two Body Combat classes per week, and I also attended CrossFit classes four to five times per week. (Yes, I was a busy girl.) Let’s not forget that I have two kids to chase after, too!

The Result

Both a physical and mental transformation took place and was more amazing than I expected. I lost 17 pounds and felt great, bringing my overall weight loss to 110 pounds. Mentally, I felt free from the ties that bound me to the scale. I used to be so obsessed about checking my weight, never considering that it is merely one measurement in assessing health. And it doesn’t tell the whole story, anyway.

In that time I had a few indulgences, but for the first time didn’t feel bad about it. I didn’t feel like I had to make up for it at the gym, or starve myself the next day. I knew that everything else I did for my body was good.

It’s been about a week since I checked the scale, and I can’t say that I’m drawn to it anymore. I know that as long as I treat my body well, feed it, keep it hydrated and challenge it, it will serve me well and my health won’t hinge on the three digits on the scale.

    Lori,
    I know I’ve told you before, but the more I learn about your routines, and your drive and … everything, I am in even more awe.

    You are a true “poster child” for people that you CAN lose weight and get healthy without surgery or “tricks.” You just need hard work and drive.

    What an amazing woman you are. Thank you so much for sharing your journey (and continuing to share it). I get inspired every time I read something from you.
