How Can Parents Be A Positive Role Model For Their Children?

Parental Responsibility: Being a GREAT Role Model to Your Children

When it comes to raising children, there can be many factors we need to look at.

This can include dealing with difficult behavior, and ensuring that good manners are present at all times.

However, to be in a position to do this, we need to ensure that we are ourselves are portraying the right kind of example to children.

We’re all human, and it’s only natural that we make mistakes from time to time, but we need to ensure that we adhere to these mistakes and ensure that they’re rectified as soon as possible.

Being a positive role model to your children can encompass many factors, including the following.

Parents Must Take Care of Themselves

When we’re trying to enforce bedtime rules, it can be difficult if children see that we’re not getting the right amount of sleep.

There’s no denying that holding down a job in today’s world is more difficult than ever, but that doesn’t mean we should be suffering as a result.

Taking time out to rest up and pamper yourself not only ensures your children see how vital it is to look after themselves, but they also gain some quality time with you.

Make Sure Your Child Can Depend on You

Many of us would have made arrangements we have made with children in the past, and sometimes it’s simply unavoidable.

However, we shouldn’t let it become a habit, otherwise, you could soon find that you’re seeing the same traits in your children.

If we make arrangements with our children, then we should try and ensure that we’re not breaking the arrangements, which will then set a precedent for the child moving forward.

Take Time to Listen to Your Children

To be a dependable role model, you need to ensure that you’re making time for your children, especially if they have something to say.

If a child is stating their side of the story, then you need to ensure you’re listening, even if you don’t entirely agree.

Taking the time to listen to our children ensures that we are approachable and setting a good example of how we should interact with others, even if we’re not in total agreement.

Be Careful with Family Finances

When it comes to being a role model, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the way we handle our money has very little effect on children, but nothing could be further from the truth.

If we’re constantly using credit, then it won’t be long before children think this is how we should handle our finances.

Of course, there are situations that call for use of credit, such as a car or house purchase.

While this is unavoidable, we can still teach children the value of money in finding the right deal, and using our bargaining skills where necessary.

The importance of spending time with children has already been touched upon, but it’s especially important that we don’t compensate with handouts.

There is nothing wrong with odd treat here and there, but continually issuing handouts as compensation can mean that children expect this in their later life.

In some instances, it could be as severe as your children not being able to keep their financial affairs in order once they reach adulthood.

Admit When You’re Wrong – A Tough Lesson for Many Parents

As much as we try, there will be times when we make mistakes.

This could mean forgetting an important date or being wrong about a situation your child was involved in. When we are wrong, we should make sure that we apologize and not shirk it off.

The way we handle our own errors will have a bearing on how our children deal with similar issues in the future.

Apologizing to children when we’re wrong ensures that children that everyone makes mistakes, even adults.

Handle Family Relationships in The Right Way

There will be times when some of us will fall out with siblings.

There may even be times when a relationship breaks down completely and there’s a lot of tension.

Depending on the situation, it’s not uncommon for tempers to flare, but we need to ensure that children aren’t witnessing any hostile behavior or hearing bad things about a certain individual.

Handling relationship issues in a responsible and mature manner will ensure our children do the same.

If we’re constantly feuding with someone, then it could have a detrimental effect in the future.
